Abstract

Abstract

The Medici's Farm of Cascine di Tavola, commissioned by Lorenzo Il Magnifico in 1477, and the set of agro-environmental areas functional to it, have over time been configured as an extraordinary unitary system of agro-environmental and cultural-landscape value and of exemplary relevance as a model of co-evolutionary man-nature management of the territory. Starting from this legacy - and also from the improper management and interventions of which it was subject in the second half of the nineteenth century - the research seeks to retain the genealogy and identity of this heritage, identifying, both in terms of analysis and design scenario, the conditions for a realistic process of regeneration not only of the cultural heritage that characterizes it but also of its territorial "framing" function and as a tool for "socio-ecological" innovation and sustainable local planning and development.

Abstract

Culture and heritage are relevant elements in the marinas' landscape, and they could be competitive advantages in the management of these maritime facilities. This paper explores the marinas' cultural heritage and cultural landscape, and it attempts to deep into the relationship between them. The identification and evaluation of these elements represents a main stage. It is also proposed three relationship models, ranging from integration, to strengthen and evolution, which enhance the image of the marina and its environment.

Abstract

"Even as the global economy of the twenty-first century continues its dramatic and unpredictable transformations, the landscapes it leaves in its wake bear the indelible marks of their industrial past. Whether in the form of abandoned physical structures, displaced populations, or ecological impacts, they persist in memory and lived experience across the developed world. This collection explores the affective and "more-than-representational" dimensions of post-industrial landscapes, including narratives, practices, social formations, and other phenomena. Focusing on case studies from across Europe, it examines both the objective and the subjective aspects of societies that, increasingly, produce fewer things and employ fewer workers"--

Abstract

Lemon houses (limonaie) are ancient terraced citrus gardens that shape the landscape along the NW shore of Lake Garda (Northern Italy). We propose an interpretation of limonaie as a deeply anthropogenic, labour intensive, multifunctional landscape that shares many characteristics with the oases of the wider Mediterranean basin. Any intervention which aims at preserving the fragility and peculiarity of the area, as well as the intangible cultural heritage of the citrus cultivation, should be framed in a holistic agroecosystemic perspective, deeply rooted in the knowledge of the limonaie past.

Abstract

On a global scale, athalassic inland salt lakes are abundant, albeit restricted to semiarid and arid climates. La Salada de Chiprana is unique in Western Europe, because it is a permanent and relatively deep (up to 5.6 m) hypersaline lake (40-90 g total dissolved salt L-1) since 1700 AD. It forms part of a cultural landscape, which imposes a challenge for management. The aim of this paper is to describe the specific microbial biota and how they interacted with both animals and plant species during the last 25 years. The deeper parts regularly showed salinity stratification with an anoxic sulfide-rich hypolimnion and a bloom of green sulfur bacteria (Prosthecochloris aestuarii and Chlorobium vibrioforme) at the pycnocline. Despite highly eutrophic conditions, often the top water layer is transparent due to top-down control of phytoplankton populations by the brine shrimp, Artemia parthenogenetica. This allows for the development of submerged aquatic vegetation of the endemic foxtail stonewort Lamprothamnium papulosum var. papulosum f. aragonense, and microbial mat communities build by the cyanobacterium Coleofasciculus (Microcoleus) chthonoplastes coexisting with green filamentous nonsulfur bacteria (Chloroflexaceae). The microbial mats show photosynthetically induced precipitation of high-Mg calcite, which by incorporating viruses represents a mechanism for their fossilization.
